A tool for sharing your favorite video clips (vlips) from TV, movies, and the internet, Vlipsy allows users to make their favorite internet videos conversational.

It’s no secret that GIFs have enhanced the way we communicate, allowing loopable graphics to elevate the meaning of what we’re trying to say. When a moment arrises where a visual can enhance our message, GIFs get the job done — well…sometimes.

While GIFs indeed magnify the way we communicate, they often miss the mark with long subtitles that emulate something from the silent-film era.

Enter Vlipsy — loopable vlips (video clips) that play inline with messaging and web platforms just like GIFs, but with SOUND!

How It Started:

Although officially having launched this past June, the proverbial seed for the idea for Vlipsy was planted almost two years ago between co-founders Chris Nickless and Matt Tew. Colleagues for over 10 years together and friends for even more, Nickless and Tew identified a weakness in the way we communicate digitally.

Like many, the Vlipsy co-founders often quote their favorite scenes from TV shows and movies. But, sending these in GIF form doesn’t quite live up to the experience, with the iconic lines having to be read via captions and subtitles instead of heard. And, while YouTube allows for users to share long-form video to one another, it doesn’t allow for snippets of that perfect scene to be shared, with the intended quote often burried somewhere in the middle of a much longer video.

Striving to fix the issue, Nickless and Tew created the idea for Vlipsy — a way to search and share iconic quotes in short expressive video clips (vlips) that can be shared to texts, tweets, snaps and comments.

How It Works:

Vlipsy allows users to search, find, and share their favorite vlips in numerous ways, from downloading the full-functioning Vlipsy app for iPhone and Android, to using one of the various integrations with Slack, Skype, Viber, and other popular messaging platforms.

Users can also share to popular social media apps like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram directly through the app, or from Vlipsy’s clean-cut web experience.

Even more, iPhone users can send vlips seamlessly by installing Vlipsy for iMessage and sharing vlips through the keyboard function:

Users can also make their own vlips using the creator and trimming tool on Vlipsy’s website.
